Zone 4 : Regional Educational Expansion

The exhibition traces the physical development of the regional campuses starting with Kanchanaburi Campus which was established in 1995.

The physical development there was mainly in tandem with the increasing number of students as well as the local terrain. This was followed by the establishment in 2001 of Nakhon Sawan Campus where emphasis was placed on conservation of natural surroundings and avoidance of high rises. (Due to expansion needs, the campus was relocated in 2010 to Khao Thong Sub-district, Phayuha Khiri District, Nakhon Sawan Province.) The third is Amnat Charoen Campus which was established in 2006 and is currently (in 2011) in the planning stage as regards major constructions and infrastructure in anticipation of future enrollments.

Mahidol University Kanchanaburi Campus

Kanchanaburi Campus was established on 20th June, 1995 covering an area of 6,000 rai (2,372 acres) in Lumsum Sub-district, Sai Yok District, Kanchanaburi Province. The site was selected for its suitable location surrounded by pristine nature and facilitated by public utilities and easy accessibility. Although in conformity with the 1997 Master Plan, its physical development was designed to blend in with its environment and geographical settings. Major buildings include the Administration Building, Central Classroom Building, Laboratory, Centre for Population and Social Research, and the Centre for Tropical Disease Research Kanchanaburi under the auspices of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine. The expansion outlook will mainly rely on the increasing number of students. In the meantime, the Kanchanaburi Provincial Administration has additionally relinquished to the university a 24-rai (approximately 9.5-acre) plot of land on the river bank under the auspices of Lumsum Sanitation Administration. This could be the site for a future research centre.

Mahidol University, Nakhon Sawan Campus

Mahidol University Nakhon Sawan Campus was originally established at Bueng Senat Sub-district on 18th September, 2001. However, after it was severely inundated, the campus had to be relocated to more suitable location, i.e. a plot of approximately 1,000 rai (395.5 acres) in Khao Thong Sub-district, given the availability of public utilities as well as its accessibility. Constructions are carried out in phases in tandem with the academic development following the 2010 Master Plan. Emphases are on the conservation of natural surroundings and avoidance of high rises. Major buildings under the construction plan include the Mahidol Nakhon Sawan Medical Centre and the multi-purpose Scientific Laboratory Building. Consideration is also given to community participation and benefits, as reflected in the planning of a reservoir to serve not only the campus but also the community.

Mahidol University, Amnat Charoen Campus

The campus project has been implemented since 2006. The campus is situated in two separate locations, one on a 43-rai (approximately 17-acre) plot of state property at Amnat Charoen Government Centre in Bung Sub-district, Mueang Amnat Charoen District, and the other on a 384-rai (approximately 152-acre) plot in Dong Hua Kong and Dong Bang I Forests, Sang Nok Tha Sub-district, Mueang Amnat Charoen District. The two locations thus cover a combined area of almost 427 rai (169 acres). As of 2010, the first building at the former plot has been the multi-purpose building that houses classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, a library, a computer room and a scientific laboratory, among others. There are plans for major constructions such as those of a central classroom building, dormitories for academic staff and personnel while basic infrastructure is being addressed in anticipation of future enrollments.
