Zone 5 : Relations with the Surrounding Communities at Various

Each of the six campuses of Mahidol University has significantly brought about positive physical changes to their surroundings.

The establishment of the first two in Bangkok Metropolis (Bangkok Noi and Phyathai Campuses) has transformed the respective area into an education and public health centre while the establishment of Mahidol University Salaya Campus has transformed the surrounding areas into an academic community where business has experienced rapid growth, fully equipped with housing and infrastructural facilities. Likewise, the regional expansion through the establishment of the three regional campuses has transformed the respective provinces into local centres for higher education as well as upgraded the quality of life of the people in the respective regions.

Bangkok Noi Campus

The establishment of Siriraj Hospital has transformed the area into a hub for interdisciplinary medical studies and quality medical services. It has also generated substantial income for traders in surrounding communities, especially the community of Wang Lang. Despite the constant additional expansion, public interest has always been taken into consideration, as evidenced the construction of, for example, Chaloem Phrakiat Park, waterfront walkways and piers. To protect community environment, wastewater from the hospital is subjected to standardized treatment before being drained into Chao Phraya River. Moreover, wastewater testing service is provided to neighbouring communities in an effort to ensure their well-being and safeguard the environment.

Phyathai Campus

Now an educational and public health centre of Phyathai District, the campus is situated at the metropolitan centre and thus gives priority to pollution issues through such measures as the treatment of wastewater before draining into the public sewage and creation of a community learning centre and green area in the forms of the Forest and Hornbill Parks in the premises of the Faculty of Science.

Salaya Campus

This has significantly developed into a mega-sized academic community with clusters of residences, dormitories and multiple facilities scattered all over the campus both in front and along the sides. Such development has generated bigger income for local communities. Given improved accessibility and availability of public utilities, the campus is no different from an urban community. In addition, the university’s master plan puts emphasis on the establishment of learning and green areas, environmental conservation and wastewater treatment system.

Regional Campuses

The establishment of regional campuses in Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Sawan and Amnat Charoen Provinces has contributed to the development of these areas as local centres for higher education, the upgrading of regional education, quality of life and public utilities improvement. For example, at Kanchanaburi Campus water from Kwae Noi River is drawn and treated for campus use and distributed to the surrounding communities while, at Nakhon Sawan Campus, a reservoir is planned to enhance the local communities’ irrigation system.
