Prince Mahidol

H.R.H. Prince Mahidol of Songkla was born on the 1st of January 1891, as the son of H.M. King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V), and H.M. Queen Savang Vadhana.

At the start of World War I, his adopted brother, H.R.H. Prince Rangsit, who was then the Chief of the Royal Medical College at Siriraj Hospital, requested his help in developing the hospital and the college. As Prince Mahidol had no experience of Medicine, he decided to start by furthering his own education, first in the field of Public Health, and then later in Medicine, both at Harvard University in the USA.

Whilst at Harvard, he met a scholarship student studying Nursing. This student would later become his wife, H.R.H. Princess Srinagarindra, and together they would have 3 children; H.R.H. Princess Galyani Vadhana, H.M. King Ananda Mahidol (King Rama VIII), and H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX).

Prince Mahidol would go onto to become the Director General of the University Department in the Ministry of Education, as well as teaching pre-clinical medical students at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, treating patients, establishing scholarships for students in Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, and working closely with the Rockefeller Foundation, to facilitate support for the development of Hospitals, healthcare and health education in Thailand.

Because of his dedication to improving the medical care which the Thai people receive, he is known as the Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health in Thailand. His son, H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, bestowed us with the name Mahidol University in 1969 in honor of Prince Mahidol of Songkla.

History and Long Term Collaboration

In 1888 Siriraj Hospital was founded by H.M. King Chulalongkorn. To support the development of medical care, doctors had to be trained to a high level in Thailand, and so the Royal Medical College was established. In 1943 the College was re-organized, creating new specialized departments, and establishing the independent University of Medical Sciences.

In 1983, now named ‘Mahidol University’, we officially opened our Salaya campus. The university continued to grow, expanding beyond our traditional focus on Medical Sciences to meet other needs of the country. Recently, in order to spread quality higher education around the country, we established our provincial campuses in Kanchanaburi in 2002, Nakhon Sawan in 2004, and Amnat Charoen in 2009.

International collaboration has always been important to us, from the visiting professors teaching our first students, to our modern strategic partnerships. We have been building stronger relationships with some of our partners over many decades.

Oslo University: We have collaborated with Oslo University in the field of Neuroscience for 50 years, which began with collaborative research between two of our professors. The collaboration was supported from the beginning by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

Oxford University: In 1979, almost 40 years ago, the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU) was established at the Faculty of Tropical Medicine to develop ways of diagnosing and treating diseases such as malaria, meliodosis, typhus, tuberculosis, and leptospirosis.

Osaka University: We have collaborated with Osaka University in the field of Biotechnology since 1985, starting with student exchange at the Faculty of Science, and leading to the establishment of the MU-OU Research Collaboration Unit on Life Science and Biotechnology in 2002.

A World Class University

- As one of the pioneers and main advocates of globalization of higher education in Thailand, Mahidol University remains determined to become a World Class University. A key factor in achieving this is our continued focus on the globalization of the physical and intellectual aspects of research, education, and university life.

- This affects everyone, especially our students, who now receive numerous opportunities to incorporate an international experience into their studies through student exchange, dual and double degree programs, international collaborative research projects, internships, and student competitions.

- Mahidol University firmly believes that international study and research experiences are vital to an individual’s academic, professional, and personal development. These opportunities not only help to generate valuable hard-skills in study and research, but also important soft-skills such as creativity, flexibility, independence and problem solving, which are essential for the global working environment and global citizenship.

International Activities

Mahidol University works on a wide range of activities and services to support our students in gaining an international experience. Our Thai undergraduate students can spend 4 weeks abroad studying a course in Comparative Culture, or take part in the Backpacker Scholarships, with which groups of 4 students can travel in an ASEAN country for 1 week. Every year International Relations Division selects the Mahidol University International Relations (MUIR) Ambassadors, who assist with international events to gain international working experience. For inbound mobility, visiting students receive the excellent level of support we aim for through the Mahidol University Student, International and Academic Services (MUSAIS), on the ground floor of Mahidol Learning Center, which coordinates their stays.

We provide over 300 scholarships for exceptional international students to come to Mahidol University to study Master’s and PhD Degrees in a range of selected fields, as well as a range of capacity building scholarships in collaboration with international organizations. We also support our students to study or undertake research or internships abroad, as well as staff mobility programs to help our academic and administrative staff develop their skills at our partner universities. By providing students and staff with world class education and training, they can develop the skills needed to contribute to improving standards in their fields at home.

Strategic Partnerships

At Mahidol University, we have over 500 partnership agreements with universities and research institutions around the world, allowing us to collaborate on a range of academic and research activities. Our aim for the future is to move beyond these agreements, to build stronger relationships with selected Strategic Partners in 7 key areas:

Global Citizens

In today’s globalized world, it is important to make sure that our graduates have the skills to be competitive in an international working environment, and to contribute to solving global problems. We want to make sure all our students understand the value and rewards of working together, from our undergraduate students working on group projects and presentations, to our post-doctoral researchers taking part in collaborative research. We run a range of extracurricular workshops and competitions, giving our students opportunities to challenge themselves and come up with innovative solutions to real world problems. Our focus on Problem-based Learning helps students to link together different skills, disciplines and ideas, by looking at the bigger picture and seeing the real world applications of what they study. When our students really want to change the world, they can start their own business by licensing university research, and with support from the Mahidol University Business Incubator, part of the university’s Institute for Innovation and Technology Management. We want Mahidol University to be at the heart of our community, and so we lead by example through our socially focused research and outreach projects, and creating opportunities for our students to get involved in helping the community.
