Sood Sangvichien Prehistoric Museum & Laboratory

Sood Sangvichien Prehistoric Museum & LaboratoryIn 1960 when Prof. Dr. Sood Sangvichien, a specialist in anatomy and anthropology, joined an archaeological excavating mission at Chorakhe Phueak Sub-district, Kanchanaburi Province where it is considered to be Thai-land’s one of the most significant prehis-toric excavation sites; he had the opportu-nity to study tools, appliances, ornaments and earthenware that were buried with the skeletons. Later, he made collections of these objects, and these became the first exhibits at his museum, officially open to the public in 1972.

This museum will take visitors back to prehistoric civilization, when pieces of a Homo erectus skeleton were found in Thailand known as ‘Lampang Man’, who shared the age of his lifetime with ‘Peking Man’. The ‘Lampang Man’ walked the earth approximately 1,000,000 – 400,000 years ago. The exhibit includes tools from three different ages, namely Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic, aged over 1,000,000 – 4,000 years, as well as beads, colorful stones and various designs of painted earthenware.
